Biography
About Dr. Rutendo Rukarwa
Dr. Rutendo Rukarwa known to her colleagues and patients as "Rue" is a Specialist Physician and Rheumatologist with over 17 years of clinical experience. She is the founder of RheumaMed, Gaborone's dedicated private rheumatology clinic, and holds specialist consulting appointments at Gaborone Private Hospital.
Born and raised in Harare, Zimbabwe, Dr. Rukarwa completed her undergraduate medical degree (MBChB) at the University of Zimbabwe before practising as a Medical Officer. She subsequently obtained a Postgraduate Diploma in Family Medicine at Stellenbosch University, broadening her clinical foundation before pursuing specialist training.
Her specialist journey took her to the University of the Witwatersrand, where she completed a Master of Medicine in Internal Medicine (MMed) one of the most rigorous postgraduate medical programmes in Africa. She then attained a Fellowship with the College of Physicians of South Africa (FCP), followed by a sub-speciality Certificate in Rheumatology (Cert Rheum, SA) through the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa.
This combination of qualifications MBChB, PGD Fam Med, MMed, FCP(SA), and Cert Rheum(SA) represents a depth of specialist training in rheumatology that is rare in Botswana and uncommon in the broader region. Dr. Rukarwa established RheumaMed specifically to make this standard of specialist care available to patients in Botswana who have historically had to travel to South Africa or further to access it.
Too many patients come to me after years of being told their symptoms are stress, or aging, or nothing to worry about. Rheumatic conditions are real, they are diagnosable, and they are treatable — but only if someone takes the time to look properly.
Her specialist focus is Lupus (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) and connective tissue disease a category of autoimmune conditions that disproportionately affects women, is frequently misattributed to other illnesses, and that demands the precise diagnostic work-up that only a specialist is trained to conduct.
